Scala Naturae
The hierarchy of nature, the chain of beings, the hierarchy of the living. The concept of the Scala Naturae reflects humanity's need to organize and categorize the world. Is it for our own comfort and elevation? Jean-Paul Sartre simplified the world into the Living and the Existing - with humans as the only beings capable of transcending mere existence.
Reflecting on his cat, photographer Luca Ellena began to ponder and question this concept. The result is a black and white photo series that takes a curious and questioning look at our living environment. Ellena peers into the soul of his subjects. Through a play of distance and closeness, he imbues the subjects with a special aura, inviting viewers to immerse themselves. Light and shadow shape graceful scenes, evoking stories and processes in the mind's eye.
